Team Purpose
Since 1991, the Hallowell Hurricanes Swim Team has
provided young people the chance to experience competitive swimming in a fun
environment. All members of the Hallowell and Lake Hallowell community pools
between the ages of 5-18 can join. Besides offering competitive swimming, the
team has three important goals:
-
To provide competent coaching so that
swimmers can improve their skills and better enjoy the sport.
-
To help swimmers develop self-discipline and
self-pride as they assume the responsibilities of belonging to a team and
working with others.
-
To encourage family participation and sharing
in the fun and excitement of the meets and other activities.
Each year more and more team members choose to
swim year-round in the Rockville-Montgomery
Swim Club (RMSC) at the nearby Olney Swim Center because of their positive
summer experience with the Hurricanes. Our team is proud of the large
number of families we have exposed to the great sport of swimming.
Team History
The Hallowell Hurricanes Swim Team began as a swim club to
give the youth of Hallowell the opportunity to take part in a fun and worthwhile
summer activity. Through the efforts of Marsha Criscio, the team started out
with about 30 swimmers who met twice a week to practice. The team also
participated in several "B" meets with other pools. With the help of Montgomery
County Swim League (MCSL) board member Frank Negro and Hallowell board
member Marianne Murphy, local Hallowell residents Criscio and Keith Tetter
rallied enough support from the community to petition the league to join the
MCSL. The league accepted Hallowell's petition and, in the summer of 1992,
Hallowell started its first season in Division M. From 1994 until a tough loss
to Rockville in 2000, the growing Hurricanes team was unbeaten, moving up the
league to Division "B".
In the 2001 season, Hallowell made its way to
Division A. After four years of fierce competition, the Hurricanes
successfully won Division A in 2004. The
Hurricanes look forward to defending our title during the 2005 season when we once again find ourselves
competing in Division A against against perennial powers Flower Valley,
Mill Creek Towne, Upper County, Rockville and Tilden Woods.
